The VW bug came to American when I was still too young to drive, but Detroit didn’t bother to make anything to rival it until over 20 years later, and that was not due to their altruism but due to former gas-guzzler customers buying German and Japanese and Italian economy cars. I have no problem with not buying American if American car manufacturers have no problem gouging me for a pollution-mobile.
